Digestive Health
Take a moment to analyze your meal. Is it filled with vibrant colorful fruits and veggies, or does meat and starch overwhelm your plate?
Most people fail to realize the important role food plays in our everyday lives. Did you know for every meal you eat, a bowel movement should follow? So, for example if you eat 3 meals a day, then you should have 3 bowel movements that day. Your bowel health is a key indicator to determine if you're consuming the right foods. Well what is the Right Foods? Everyday you should be consuming foods that are high in fiber, low in sugar, and minimum amounts of processed foods. I say minimum because we all have our guilty pleasures we like to indulge in every so-often.
Constipation
Constipation can become a real issue and lead to many diseases. The best way to avoid those disease are by taking preventative measures. This can include drinking plenty of water, raw juices, fiber-boosting smoothies, eating raw fruits/veggies, and exercise.
The foods we eat should pass through our stomach, small intestines, large intestines then to your anus as a bowel movement. When the food becomes "stuck" in our large intestines this termed constipation. Constipation eventually leads to the food rotting and fermenting. Toxins will then build-up and leak into the bloodstream. Toxic accumulation in the blood is what leads to disease. Don't be afraid to look in the toilet and take a peek at your poop! Some people may consider this to be taboo or gross, but your poop can reveal a lot about your digestive health. Some examples can include:
Black tarry stools can be a sign of a gastrointestinal bleed
Floating poop can indicate too many fatty foods, low fiber, or gas-producing foods
Poop that looks like pebbles may be a sign of a low fiber diet
FIBER IS KEY
Fiber is essential for your gut health!
Most fruits and vegetables contain fiber, which helps to regulate blood sugar by slowing the release & absorption of sugar. There are two types of fiber, which are insoluble and soluble. They are both equally important for digestion. Insoluble fiber acts like a broom and sweeps the inside of the intestines, speeds up digestion and adds bulk to your stool. This bulkiness is what regulates your bowel movements. This particular fiber is present in higher amounts in smoothies vs raw juices. Soluble fiber also helps regulates blood sugar, lower cholesterol levels, easily absorbed and give the feeling of satiation. Good sources of high fiber foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.
Fasting
Consuming your fruits and veggies in the forms of a smoothie or raw juice gives your digestive system a break and time to heal. Fasting from solid foods during a raw juice detox cleanses your body on a deep cellular level. To read more about fasting check out my article, "A beginner's guide to a Raw Juice Detox".
